Now this is what I had in mind for a Monty Python live show. After the inept and fairly upsetting work the remaining five Python’s put out in Monty Python Live (Mostly), I was hesitant to check out any of their other live works. But after this landed itself on Netflix and stuck around for a while, I thought I’d be safe to test the waters once more.

As it turns out, age very much factors in to the Python’s, especially when they’re live. Monty Python: Live at the Hollywood Bowl is some of the funniest content the Python’s have produced. It’s criminal that I’ve only just seen it, especially having been such a huge fan of them all for so long. Arguably funnier than some of the pieces that made it into the show and their movies, the live performance provides some excellent examples of the chemistry this troupe of comedians had together.

Like any good sketch show or routine, there are more hits than misses, but the misses are often subverted by the hits. Enough hits and your show is able to phase out the sketches that don’t offer up all that much. It was whenever the Python’s hopped into the audience, that’s what did it for me. It felt more like filler, giving Cleese and Idle more time to change into their costumes, rather than being a well written sketch.

But some of the sketches throughout are an absolute riot and some of the best work the Python’s ever wrote. It’s a real shame that some of these sketches are exclusive to this routine, with the final two sketches of the show being the best all round.

With a comfortable running time and a definitely rewatchable show (much like most of the Python’s other work), Live at the Hollywood Bowl is a must for any fans of arguably the greatest comedy troupe of all time.
