I’ve never had a more painful viewing experience than my time with Beyond the Black Rainbow. I should point out this is a very good movie, just I had no way of watching it other than to stream it online. So after finding stream after stream, eventually finding a HD version, the internet went down. It didn’t come back up until today.

From the man that directed Mandy, Beyond the Black Rainbow is very much in a similar, eerie vein. Filled to the brim with some intense visuals, the biggest selling point of any Panos Cosmatos film. His direction here fast overtakes Mandy in regard to visual prowess. Scenes of melting backgrounds, intense lighting of ominous motif and a general sense of dread feature prominently throughout and make Beyond the Black Rainbow so truly mesmerising.

If it weren’t for this intense, underlying tone of horror the film holds the whole way through, it’d be difficult to discuss how and why Beyond the Black Rainbow is in fact so appealing. With a plot that is confusing at best, it feels like the film relies all too much on these impressive visuals.

Michael Rogers’ performance as the psychotic Barry Nyle is some of his greatest work to date. A general breakdown of the character in a short review doesn’t do him justice, and it’s this performance throughout that gives this movie such a unique aura. Although his character is the definite antagonist, and his lines could’ve done with a bit of a re-work, there’s something very interesting about his character. Maybe it’s the subliminal style of the performance, proving once and for all that you a reserved performance can often make for the most interesting.

What Beyond the Black Rainbow does most of all is prove to me that Cosmatos is more than just a one hit wonder. His phenomenal work on Mandy (My film of the year for 2018) is testament to his abilities, and it’s nice to see his more experimental roots here – which the film proudly shares with us throughout its twisted and wickedly superb plot.

A completely similar style and tone to that of his other works, Beyond the Black Rainbow is an extremely tense and enjoyable thriller that will appeal to any fan of the genre. Blending a variety of unique cinematography elements with the most foundation levels of any plot point of film, it’s an experience you can never have twice. It felt like a psychedelic episode of Doctor Who. A real classic sci-fi vibe with the intensity turned up to the max.
