A new beginning to the year can only mean one thing – the release of some highly anticipated films. These five films below are the ones we’re personally excited about. Let us know what you’re anticipating for release this year in the comments below!
TOY STORY 4
After captivating a whole new generation of audiences with Toy Story 3 Pixar Studios are set to repeat the magic once more with Toy Story 4.
Following Woody, Buzz and all the fan favourite characters from the original trilogy, the gang set off to find Bo Peep.
With a definite precedent set against the movie, it’ll be interesting to see if Toy Story 4 can in fact adhere to the standards of the series. Many believed the third in the series was the fitting send-off the characters deserved, so pulling them out of retirement once more is a risky move.
Still, we’re just as excited as you’d expect us to be. Both the chance to relive some childhood nostalgia and introduce a new generation of film fans to one of the most endearing series around.
JOHN WICK: PARABELLIUM
If you’ve not had the chance to check out the John Wick trilogy yet, then give our reviews of the first and second movies a read through. The Keanu Reeves led action series has met critical acclaim, and director Chad Stahelski will hope to continue the trend of the series thus far.
Containing many of the same characters that have appeared in the first and second instalments, John Wick: Parabellium is set to be the final outing of the John Wick character.
It’ll be sad to see John Wick come to an end – but it doesn’t mean we’re any less excited to see the send-off of one of the action movie genre’s finest characters.
A new Martin Scorsese movie is always something that’ll make heads turn. Releasing through Netflix (and also for a limited time in the cinema), The Irishman is set to star a whole host of Scorsese favourites. Including Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, the returning Joe Pesci and Harvey Keitel – The Irishman is set to take the world by storm.
Not much is known of the plot or overall tone of the movie. But what we do know is that De Niro is set to star, and Ray Romano will also feature. It’s an expected crime drama from a legendary film director.
ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD
Another movie from an acclaimed director that we don’t know all that much about. Tarantino’s penultimate and newest movie, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood has had unconfirmed rumours circulating for the entire duration of its production.
Set at the height of the Manson family murders, Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio star as two Hollywood stunt men. How these two plot points will connect, only time will tell. An all star cast that brings Pitt and DiCaprio together for the first time.
Much like Scorsese’s The Irishman, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood features an express train full of expected Tarantino favourites. Bruce Dern, Tim Roth and Michael Madsen are all set to make appearances throughout.
STAR WARS: EPISODE IX
Maybe we’re just excited to see the end of a very mediocre trilogy, or maybe it’ll be nice to see Richard E. Grant as an Imperial Officer. Either way, Star Wars: Episode IX is happening, and you may as well get excited for it.
The fifth Star Wars movie we’ve had since 2015, and there are no signs of the series stopping anytime soon. By all means, we are excited – but we’re not sure why. With the original members of the cast all but phased out, we’re given some moderate performances that range from good to alright with nothing outlying.
Still, it’s the end of yet another Star Wars trilogy, and closure is always nice.
Be sure to tell us what you’re looking forward to from 2019, it’s slated to be a pretty difficult year for film.
