On Wednesday, President Trump formally announced an end to failed U.S. foreign policy with regard to Jerusalem. Finally, the U.S. will recognize the Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and move its embassy to the world’s holiest city.
“We cannot solve our problems by making the same failed assumptions and repeating the same failed strategies of the past,” the President said. “Today we finally acknowledge the obvious: that Jerusalem is Israel’s capital,” Mr. Trump said from the Diplomatic Reception Room of the White House. “This is nothing more or less than a recognition of reality. It is also the right thing to do. It’s something that has to be done.”
For nearly 20 years, Presidents of the United States took advantage of a waiver which allowed them to bypass Congressional calls to move the embassy. President Trump’s decision finally ended that era and fulfilled a major campaign promise.
The President rightfully believes that this is a step towards peace in the Middle East.
For years, Jerusalem has been used as a bargaining chip by the Palestinian Authority, a major terrorist organization, to control the Israeli state and dominate the negotiation tables. In the Muslim-controlled parts of the city, Jews live in perpetual fear if they have not been forcibly removed or killed already. This includes the city’s holiest site, the Temple mount, which is under Muslim control. Jews are prohibited from entering or praying there. In the Jewish-controlled parts of the city, Muslims are free to visit in peace. That is the difference between tyranny and democracy.
“Above all, our greatest hope is for peace.” With those words, the President outlined the major purpose of this decision. According to him, this decision is “obvious” as all history shows. Jerusalem has been and always will be the Jewish capital. It is no coincidence that the word Jerusalem is a focal point in every Jewish prayer and is mentioned hundreds of times in the Old Testament, but zero times in the Quran.
Now, the Palestinians will begin to lose their claim to Jerusalem. They will be forced to acknowledge that the Jews have every claim to their ancestral home.
Many Liberals have bashed the decision, claiming that it was selfishness and pomposity that led to the decision. In addition, other world leaders, including the Chinese ministry and the European Union, have formed a chorus of antipathy against the move. Their fear is that it will destabilize the region.
They might be shocked to hear that the region has almost never been stable, except when the Jews maintained control over their promised land. Jerusalem has been bleeding since its domination by Muslims and the Palestinian government has been awash with elected terrorists and anti-Semites who would sooner see Israel obliterated. Only now, with Israeli control over their capital, can peace and democracy begin to take hold again. Only now can hate be stymied and common decency upheld.
This is a bold move by the President, and one the world so desperately needed. In Obama’s own words, the world has been devoid of “American leadership” now that Trump sits in the oval office. Ironically, he is leading the world in ways his predecessors were too cowardly to event attempt.
