We all really like bees. They are the hero to the anti-christs that are wasps. They are fat, fuzzy and cute. Their job is to buzz about and make the world a better place in general. And unlike bastard wasps, they only sting you if you started it. Sadly we also know they are dying out rapidly, which is the end could be an absolute catastrophe.
And yes. We can make many memes and share many memes about bees dying. Plus we can take the piss out of Bee Movie, but that really doesn’t get rid of the problem. If the bee population dies out, we will be in bigger trouble than you know.
WHY ARE THE BEES DYING OUT?
Chemicals: It’s still a debate today, but there’s a strong theory that the more pesticides we use, the more it affects the bees. They ingest these chemicals that farmers use, sometimes killing them instantly. Other times they bring the chemicals back to their colony through their bodies and pollen, spreading the chemicals and killing in large quantities. Chemicals also affect the food chain as it kills mites which is what the bees eat. I think we might be overusing the chemicals here, and pushing the bee population to the breaking point.
Climate Change: As global warming makes temperatures increase, many plant and animal species in the Northern Hemisphere are shifting their range north. But ecologists have discovered that bees are not joining that trend to move north. Instead of shifting north like many other species, their range is only compressing in from the south, leaving less and less available habitat. They’re lack of habitat, just like with all animals, means they are dying out faster and faster.
Colony collapse disorder: Colony Collapse Disorder, is the phenomenon that occurs when the majority of worker bees in a colony disappear and leave behind a queen, plenty of food and a few nurses to care for the remaining young bees and the queen. Because of the death of the workers means the hive cannot sustain itself. This means the queen, the babies and the nurse bees, will just die out completely.
WHAT WILL HAPPEN IF THE BEES DIE OUT?
They are crucial pollinators. They pollinate 70 of the around 100 crop species that feed 90% of the world. Honey bees are responsible for $30 billion a year in crops. They’re very important and that’s only the start. We will lose all the plants that they pollinate, all of the animals that eat those plants and so on up the food chain. A world without bees will struggle greatly to sustain the global human population of 7 billion, and growing. Supermarkets would have half the amount of fruit and vegetables.
WHAT WE CAN DO TO SAVE THEM
Here are a few things we can do to help save the bees:
- Plant herbs and flowers to help provide the creatures a habitat
- Weeds count as a flower too, so maybe let them grow?
- Cut down on pesticides and chemicals as it brings harm to them and their colonies.
- Simply don’t kill them? If they fly near you, don’t fucking mash it up with a newspaper
So overall, its not a difficut task. Doing these small things could help prevent a massive disaster to the human race. Please save the bees.
