Tom and Jerry: 1940 – Ongoing
Created by: Hanna-Barbera
Cast: Uhm, nobody?

This is a weird one. I mean, there’s no cast for a start, and that’s probably the least weird thing about this show. What is there to say about Tom and Jerry though? It’s been around for almost eighty years and by this point and there’s so much to talk about. Everyone has heard of this show. I don’t care how old you are or where you’re from, the show is one of the most well known out there.

The very first episode appeared in 1940 with Puss Gets the Boots. Tom and Jerry were once called Jasper and Jinx. Believe me, the show would not be getting recommended if it were to be called Jasper and Jinx. It doesn’t have the same ring to it that Tom and Jerry has.

But regardless of the name of this show, what’s it all about? A cat is trying to catch a mouse. Boom, that’s been the premise for eighty years of television. Somehow every episode has been so unique and brilliant for so long and if that isn’t enough to convince you then I don’t know what will.

Animated shows are very often, if not all the time, slapstick. This show is basically the ground works of slapstick animation. Most of the harm goes towards the cat, Tom. He’s beaten up and put through hell all for the sake of a mouse that he’s rarely ever caught.

If you do want to watch this show, be wary of the many different variations of the show. The original run is by Hanna-Barbera. Then in the 60s Gene Deitch made some short animations and it all stemmed from here on. Followed by Chuck Jones and a whole host of other animators that have put their own spin on things. To be honest it creates for a very unique viewing experience. One minute you’ve got slapstick comedy and the next you have a genuine plotline.

Currently there’s an app available on Xbox One with the original series of episodes. I thought this was amazing, it has all of them there, ready to play at a moments notice. You can more than likely get the rest of them on Amazon, I know I have a bundle of DVDs about Tom and Jerry. And, of course, you can watch it illegally, which I wouldn’t recommend. You need to pay some form of respect to the greatest animated show of all time.

A bit of a bonus is the show Tom and Jerry Tales. It’s basically the newest version of Tom and Jerry and it’s actually quite good. I just thought I’d mention it in case you want more Tom and Jerry.
