Yu-Gi-Oh!: 2001 – 2006

Right, no, it’s not anime. I’m not a fan of anime, I’m really not. But I am a fan of Yu-Gi-Oh!, well, was. The card game was pretty fun to play and I’ve still got a couple cards somewhere. Anyways, that’s not the point. We’re here to talk about the TV Show.
So I should clarify, there is an English version of the show, this is the one I watched. However for some reason I couldn’t find the cast anywhere. I searched all over the place. iMDB, Rotten Tomatoes, nowhere. Not a single mention of the English speaking cast anywhere on the internet. So basically what I’ve done is credited the cast of the Japanese version of the show because sod it.
Anyways, the show centres around Yugi, he’s got the power of the card or something, some anime bollocks. I dunno, his grandad owns a card shop and he trusts the cards and they trust him. I must admit, the plot for Yu-Gi-Oh! really can’t be explained. Like Jesus Christ I’m struggling to remember if anything of actual substance happened.
So the writing may not be up to scratch, I mean, it’s confusing as hell to talk about but the story telling sticks to the lore which is always good. But what about the voice cast? Well the English version is just bloody cheesy. It works in favour of the show to be fair, it’s not overacted, it’s just a bit shit plain and simple.
The animation is great, it looks bloody lovely. But it’s an anime and I’m really not a fan of that anime nonsense. I can make an exception with this show though, I’m definitely not a die hard fan of Yu-Gi-Oh! but enough of a fan to watch the show.
It’s all currently available on Netflix and there’s even an abridged version on YouTube, which is basically just taking the piss out of the shows events, it’s quite good.
But yeah, give it a watch if you’re a fan of Yu-Gi-Oh, anime or just in general wanting something new to experience.
