A while ago as one of my first articles on my old, old blog, I did one about how people are now using achievements as a main focus to their gaming. I do that too, it’s actually quite fun. There is nothing more annoying than impossible achievements. I’m not talking “very hard” difficulty related achievements. I mean truly impossible and extremely with a capital “E”, difficult.

Many, many, many games have a small chunk of gamerscore attached to finishing the game on the hardest difficulty. In itself, that is a challenge. I found Call of Duty 2 on easy quite difficult but I have the gaming capacity of a lemon so that’s all well and good. While most readers can and probably have completed Call of Duty 2 on veteran, there are achievements that are simply, impossible.

A game that springs to mind is Rayman: Raving Rabbids on the Xbox 360. There’s actually a whole 3 Achievements that are impossible to unlock! One of the worst ones is “Best Rabbid Ever”, which requires you to get 174,000 points. The maximum point total you can get is 173,000. Thus, it can never be unlocked. Bit of a punch in the face if you ask me. If I ever played Rayman: Raving Rabbids I’d probably kill someone for that last bit of gamerscore. But really it all comes down if you want to complete your games along with collecting gamerscore.

If you don’t like or want to complete the game with all achievements then go for it. Nothing to lose to be quite honest. I’m still unsure on whether or not I want to 100% complete games or just grab some easy achievements and leave it. I did just play through NHL 2K6, Fifa 06: Road to the World Cup and currently finishing off Lost for gamerscore. Honestly I just don’t have the willpower to continue with that game anymore. I don’t think it’s sank in that I chose to play those on my only weekend free of work in a very long time over playing Rare Replay or something good.

However I think it’s Cars Race-o-Rama that has a glitchy 100G for completing the game. Basically it requires you to have earned all of the achievements in the game, including that one. But that one can’t be unlocked because you need all the achievements including the one that can’t actually unlock. It’s a parable, a mystery and an annoyance all in one. So if you don’t know this and are trying to get that last achievement then just stop. It’s not worth it, mainly because you can’t unlock it but it’s the fact that you’re playing Cars Race-o-Rama instead of Fallout 4.

Gamerscore collecting and achievement hunting is something I truly am passionate about because it’s fun. Well, fun in the same sense that sticking a fishing hook through your cheek in some cases, but it’s very gratifying to hear that pop for an achievement unlocking. So when you find out an achievement can’t be unlocked you feel, empty, in a way.

Some games, like I said, have extremely difficult achievements. Not impossible, but near enough to impossible. The “Annual” achievement on Halo 3 is possibly the hardest achievement in the game and offers up a whole 0G. I have that achievement and it was extremely satisfying to have that achievement pop. It now sits on my gamercard with almost every other Halo 3 achievement, I should probably finish that game at some point.

Speaking of impossible, Mega Man offers some pretty difficult achievements

We could also probably class time-consuming achievements under the impossible tag, seeing as though sometimes it’s impossible to get to a point where you want to grind the “Seriously” achievement on Gears of War. I might try going for that, apparently you can do it in local play, but what do I know. Another time-consuming one, maybe all the achievements in an RPG like Skyrim or Fallout 3. My good friend who’s probably reading this article now has almost completed Skyrim. If you are reading this Joseph, I’m going to wipe your game saves next time I’m over.

TrueAchievements does this handy thing where you can view your achievements and how difficult they are. Now the list is a bit iffy seeing as though a lot of people don’t have some basic Minecraft achievements but other than that everything’s alright. Apparently the rarest achievement I have is for completing Tsavo Highway without entering a vehicle on The Master Chief Collection, which I did accidentally. I don’t know if TrueAchievements got the ratio for some achievements wrong but I can live with it.

You might get the wrong idea of what an impossible achievement is, so I’ve written a lovely definition:

An impossible achievement is an achievement that literally cannot be earned without hacking, an achievement very few people have or an extremely difficult achievement that requires hours upon hours of work.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare actually offers up a difficult achievement with”Mile High Club”. It requires you to finish the epilogue on veteran. Doesn’t seem too difficult, right? You probably flew through the game on veteran and now you’re ready to take on Mile High Club. There are very few people out there with that achievement, as far as I’m aware. I don’t have it, none of my friends do either. Yet. The community can be extremely helpful sometimes, providing guides for those achievements you found almost impossible. They give you handy tips, hints and even exploits you can use to speed up the process of collecting achievements and getting that last bit of gamerscore you found so difficult.

Achievements have a lot to do with skill. Difficulty related achievements require some range of skill. But some achievements just require blind luck. For example, some achievements in Trivial Pursuit just require luck of the dice. A lot of board game type tie ins require a lot of luck. But then again if you get lucky then it wont be a problem.

Of course, there are also the achievements that are just ridiculously easy. Avatar: The Burning Earth, it’s the easiest Xbox 360 game available for 1000G. Literally five minutes and there you go. Of course the Xbox One equivalent would be either Ben Hur or Another World. Indie games give a lot of easy gamerscore. Mainly on Xbox One.

Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t bother with difficult achievements. I simply don’t have time to do so.

While an achievement may seem impossible, it probably isn’t. Unless it’s “The Shadows Rushed Me” achievement in Max Payne 3, that can go to hell.
